Australian Open – Day 14

You got to get up and give a standing ovation has to go to Serena Williams, who takes out Sparky Justine Henin and she pulls off the daily double. She is the first woman to win both titles here since Martina Hingis pulled off the trifecta in 1997-98-99.

Australian Open – Day 13

Yesterday’s much-anticipated clash between Roger Federer and Jo-Willy Tsonga turned out to be a deer-in-the-headlights match. I’m not sure if Jo Willy was out of gas from his last two five-set matches. On a very cold night, Tsonga came out very flat and that’s all Federer needed as he dismantled Jo-Willy in 88 minutes. He couldn’t ask for better preparation heading into Sunday night’s big showdown with Andy Murray for their second meeting in a Grand Slam final. Finally some warm weather is expected and it could be 90 degrees at game time.

Australian Open – Day 12

As we are getting to the business end of the tournament this is when the cream rises to the crop. I am not sure if I’ve ever seen a dismantling performance from Sparky Justine Henin, ending the dream run of Jie Zheng with a 12-1 absolute woodshed. I’m sure the Chinese girl would be estatic about reaching the semifinals but that was a bitter way to go down. But something tells me that Sparky was trying to send a message to Serena Williams. It was a much tougher day for Serena against Na Li, who played a lot better than I expected and pushed Serena all over the court. It looked like Serena was still holding back a gear but she still prevailed in two tie-breaks. After a tough day at the office Serena goes out and wins the doubles. It was the first time in the tournament she had to play two matches on the same day. In the doubles final today she and Venus rolled to their 11th Grand Slam doubles crown. Amazingly they are 11-0 lifetime in Slam finals and for good measure they each have won two mixed doubles titles.

Australian Open – Day 11

They call this the Happy Slam but strange things are brewing Down Under. Without a doubt the four consecutive matches yesterday had to the wildest and wooliest played on one court with each having more than an unusual twist than the other. We went 13 1/2 hours straight on Rod Laver Arena.
