Head-to-head: Nadal leads 17-9

This is the pair’s first semifinal meeting at a Grand Slam since 2005 Roland Garros and just the 2nd time that they have met outside of the final in a major. In Grand Slam play Nadal leads Federer 7-2 – both the Swiss’s victories have come at Wimbledon.

• The Top 5 seeds have taken their allotted places in the quarterfinals here. It is the just the 3rd time that the Top 5 seeds have made it through to the last 8 at Melbourne Park in the Open Era and the first time since 1983.

• Andy Murray and David Ferrer are the only 2 men through to the quarterfinals who have won a warm-up event. Murray won his 22nd career title at Brisbane and Ferrer won his 12th career title at Auckland prior to coming here. Roger Federer was the last man to win a warm-up event before claiming the title here, winning 2006 Doha.

• There are definitely 4 Grand Slam champions through to the quarterfinals here. Del Potro, Federer and Nadal have all booked their place in the last 8 and will be joined by the winner of the Djokovic v Hewitt match.

• Nishikori is the only man through to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. He is the first Japanese man to reach the quarterfinals here in the Open Era.

• 30-year-old Federer is the oldest player definitely through to the quarterfinals and 22-year-old Nishikori is the youngest. If Hewitt defeats Djokovic on Monday night, he will be the oldest male quarterfinalist at the Australian Open this year.

• Tuesday’s quarterfinals are re-matches of the 2009 US Open Final (Federer v Del Potro) and the 2010 Wimbledon Final (Nadal v Berdych).

• Lleyton Hewitt is bidding to turn the table on Novak Djokovic. Hewitt is the last No. 1 seed to lose to a player ranked outside the Top 100 at a Grand Slam event. Hewitt was No. 1 seed when he lost to No. 203 Ivo Karlovic in the 1st round at 2003 Wimbledon. Hewitt was No. 1 seed, but was ranked No. 2 in the world.

• Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin and Japan’s Kei Nishikori are the two players from Asia bidding to advance to the quarterfinals here. There have never been 2 Asian men into the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in the Open Era.
