Day 10 Men’s Notes

2011 ROLAND GARROS DAY 10 | MEN’S NOTES (via ITF)
Tuesday 31 May | Quarterfinals – Bottom Half

Featured match
No. 3 Roger Federer (SUI) v No. 9 Gael Monfils (FRA)

A 3rd meeting at Roland Garros for the 2 players. Federer is unbeaten on clay against Monfils, but the Frenchman won their most recent meeting after saving 5 match points in the semifinals at 2010 Paris-1000.

Monfils is the last Frenchman left from the 21 to start in the main draw. This was also the case when the 2 players met at 2008-09 Roland Garros.

Federer has met Monfils in the 2nd week at Roland Garros twice before. Both times he has gone on to reach the final here. In 2008, he finished as runner-up (l. Rafael Nadal), while in 2009 he went on to win his first – and only – title at Roland Garros (d. Robin Soderling).

…and the first semifinalist is revealed…
Novak Djokovic is the first man through to the semifinals at 2011 Roland Garros after his quarterfinal opponent, Fabio Fognini, gave a walkover due to a left thigh strain.

It is the first time that a player has given a walkover in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles at a major since Stefan Edberg gave Thomas Muster a walkover at the 1989 Australian Open. Muster went on to lose his semifinal match against Ivan Lendl that year.

Djokovic remains on a 43-match winning streak as a result of the walkover.
